The worst mistakes people do when having chronic anxiety
Anxiety disorders come in various forms. What unites them all, though, is the course of progress they take if not being treated right. When being neglected anxiety turns into a chronic mental condition with more severe symptoms, possible complications and doubtlessly, a tougher route of the long-lasting treatment course. But wait! Please, don’t accept these as a confident statement of mine that chronic anxiety cannot be overcome. Of course, you can.
Motivation and proper self-care approach is the healing combination you need to start with. But along the dynamic treatment way, almost any patient with chronic anxiety tends to repeat a couple of common mistakes, I observe in anybody with a kind of anxiety form. These mistakes might harmfully affect your treatment progress, so it’s very significant for you to consider whether you are making them, too.
Which are the most popular and serious mistakes people with chronic anxiety do? Let’s list them now:
- Not looking for help.
In my experience, not looking for help is generally a big mistake people tend to do. You don’t have to suffer from constant anxiety to feel eligible to ask for help. Dealing with all the problems at work or in the family, for instance, leads to severe consequences, including mental disorders such as anxiety. I always remind people I work with that we are not alone on this world. Even those of you with few friends have someone to rely on one. Everyone should have someone to rely on. And no one should deny assistance. With chronic anxiety, help is even more imperative. You need it if you want to be self-dependent, resolute and painstaking as before.
- Being too focused on reducing the anxiety level.
Anxiety isn’t a mechanism you can control and lower with your mind. It doesn’t have a regular speed to slow down. Plus – the more you think of something that bothers you, usually, the more it obsesses your mind in a totally negative way. Anxiety can be reduced, of course, but you cannot order “Ok, anxiety, stop making me feel bad now!” It’s a long way everyone must go through to lower the negative emotions. When you are disturbed and troubled, it’s better to quit everything you are doing right now and meditate, or relax, or even breathe rather than pushing on your mind to pull itself together.
- Not paying attention to the triggers
It sounds logical to avoid thinking about those factors in your life that put you back in anxious condition. However, triggers are more than just thoughts, emotions or materialistic elements that determine the anxiety. They are, as a matter of fact, the secret keys to the fast recovery of chronic anxiety. In my courses, I pay extra attention to triggers, because those who fix their triggers become a step closer to getting over the anxiety. If you know your triggers, you will know when and how anxiety moments will appear the next time. This is how you will also know how to control them.
- Being suspicious about the treatment methods you use
Let’s consider you do understand you’ve got an anxiety problem and you have even started practising some tactics to manage the condition. First of all, congratulations! Understanding and admitting your chronic anxiety drive you to a good start for an excellent treatment. However, this treatment will not work at all if you don’t fully devote yourself to it. If you don’t believe in what your mentor says you, you don’t actually do anything helpful for you. If you mock at the mental exercises for anxiety management, you are just wasting your time and money for therapists. When you are pessimist about getting better, you will never get better. Anxiety goes deeper as you keep pressing on your mind telling yourself everything sucks and nothing can be normal like before. My advice for such premeditation is to change the direction. If you don’t believe in breathing as a way to overcome a panic attack, don’t breathe, try something else until you find the right method suitable for you.
- Underestimating your physical health as part of your mental treatment
Did you know that according to the stats, about 75% of people with chronic anxiety have either hormone or digestive disorders? And were you aware that every 2 in 5 people with early-stage of anxiety claim to be indifferent to the sport, active life, healthy diets and alternative medicine as a way to relax and deal with negative emotions? These stats prove that many mental issues depend on your physical condition, too. As an anxiety specialist, I indeed emphasise on spiritual practices, but meanwhile never forget giving tips how to strengthen your body, improve the immune system and bring more eco-friendly principles in our everyday life and nutrition style.
Some of these mistakes in dealing with chronic anxiety might be not so tough to overcome on your own. As long as you find, though, difficulties in correcting them, you should not lose motivation. Instead, turn to a specialist as soon as possible.
